Painting with oils

'The Rickshawallah'
Oil on canvas board, 12 x 10 inches

Yes, you read it right…an oil painting this time! And that too after a long break of 3 years! I’m sure many of you won’t be aware that I first started painting with oils and later on switched to watercolors.
This one was made quite unexpectedly ( Of course, I have been trying to find an excuse myself to paint in oils…lol) One of my facebook friends contacted me and asked if I’d be interested to conduct a workshop in painting but it had to be either in oil or acrylics. When I said that I have had some experience in painting with oil, he told me to practice a little…to get out my old box of oil paints and brushes which were stashed inside these 3 years. Unfortunately, the workshop didn’t happen for me but I made myself a little oil painting!
However I doubt I’ll paint another one…I don’t quite like the smell of the turp…always gives me a headache and another reason is the mess of the oil colors , and not to forget the slow drying time! All the more reason for me to be happy with watercolors :)
Have a wonderful week ahead!

  1. ¡Excelente work, Ramesh....! ¡What a surprise to see you in oil...!

    Big hug.

  2. Very nice work, Ramesh. After watercolor, oils do seem a lot of hassle!I used to paint in oils earlier;and I also hated the mess and the smells....watercolor is simple clean and so fast to clear up!I paint on my dining table these days :D

  3. Hi Ramesh
Thanks for your suggestion re:changing from black to grey. I find the black affects my eyes while I'm writing! So I understand that reading can be difficult. I like the look of the black against the paintings, but I will try grey and see what I think.
Too bad you don't like oils much...this is a great piece. I like your color choices and strong values. But I guess we all have our preferences and your watercolor paintings are beautiful. I like the "messiness" of oils. If I don't like something, I take a rag and wipe the area. voila.

    1. Hi Catherine...thanks for paying attention to my suggestion. I hope grey works for you!
And thanks a ton for your positive words about this work! Though I'm fond of the rich colors and texture of oil, the smell and the mess is not good for I better stick to watercolors! :)

  4. You did an awesome job on this my friend....even though it was done in that "other" medium. :)

  5. i agree about the mess of oils.
acrylics are better alternative, you can almost simulater oils.
