Esplanade Traffic, Kolkata
Watercolor on Saunders paper
9 x 21 inches
The day was overcast following a cyclone on the eastern
coast, when I clicked this reference photo, but what attracted me was the
hustle and bustle at this place known as Esplanade, in Kolkata. The yellow taxis
added some color to the scene!
Enjoy your weekend :)

My not-so-good moment
'Green Tram, Kolkata'
Watercolor on Fabriano paper
21 x 14 inches
This was one of those moments where you go on working on the painting hoping that at the end everything would be all right but it doesn't happen! First, I messed up with the shadows! It looked very flat and dull so I just poured and poured water on it till it became light...worked on it again and lost interest after sometime but kept going on (At this stage, faith is very important... :))to complete it! At the end of the day, I had this result! Don't think much of it! What do you think?

Painting with oils
'The Rickshawallah'
Oil on canvas board, 12 x 10 inches
Yes, you read it right…an oil painting this time! And that
too after a long break of 3 years! I’m sure many of you won’t be aware that I
first started painting with oils and later on switched to watercolors.
This one was made quite unexpectedly ( Of course, I have
been trying to find an excuse myself to paint in oils…lol) One of my facebook
friends contacted me and asked if I’d be interested to conduct a workshop in
painting but it had to be either in oil or acrylics. When I said that I have had
some experience in painting with oil, he told me to practice a little…to get
out my old box of oil paints and brushes which were stashed inside these 3
years. Unfortunately, the workshop didn’t happen for me but I made myself a
little oil painting!
However I doubt I’ll paint another one…I don’t quite like
the smell of the turp…always gives me a headache and another reason is the mess
of the oil colors , and not to forget the slow drying time! All the more reason
for me to be happy with watercolors :)
Have a wonderful week ahead!

End of the day, Varanasi
Watercolor on Saunders paper 300 gsm
14 x 21 inches
Hi all…it’s been long…I recently got myself a new keyboard
(synthesizer) and am now busy creating karaoke tracks on it (yes, I do it
professionally... :) got a list of tracks to be made for a singer friend) that
I couldn't get to paint all these days! Hope to complete the order in the next
2 weeks and get back to painting. Not being able to paint is really frustrating!
Posting a painting today which I did a while ago...a scene
from Varanasi, one of the oldest cities on earth and an important pilgrimage
for us Indians! The reference photo was provided by Laurent Goldstein who is a wonderful photographer and my online friend. Laurent is from Paris but he mostly stays in Varanasi now and considers it his second home. I intend to meet him
personally the next time I visit the city!

Plein air painting
Yesterday I went to paint en plein air (painting outdoors on location) after a long time. The location which I had selected was some 12 kms from my home, on the outskirts. The place was very quiet and except for 2-3 people who were least interested in what I was doing, I hardly saw any one there!
When I had visited the place last time, there was this old dry tree which I had wanted to paint but when I reached the spot yesterday, I was surprised to find the tree all covered with fresh new leaves…LOL. Nevertheless, I decided to paint it.
Painted 2 scenes there. Here are the images. Hope you like them!

Sketchbook studies
Since I've got guests in my home right now (my sister and niece have come on summer vacation), I've got a little busy and haven't been able to paint much!
Recently, I got this new brand of paper called Decapo mainly for watercolor sketching. Its size is big (24" x 36") which, I then cut into 8 parts of 9 x 12", got them binded and BINGO...I have now a very affordable and nice little sketchbook.
Tried painting a few compositions of basically the same place from my photo references. Hope you like them! Have a great weekend :)

My Online Exhibition
'Rainy Day, Ahmedabad'
Watercolor on 300 gsm Bockingford Paper
21 x 14 inches
Made this painting recently from a reference photograph that
I took a couple of years ago when I went to Ahmedabad. We are expecting some
rains soon when the monsoon season sets in the neighboring state of Kerala.
This will provide much relief from the scorching heat which we are experiencing
right now!
This painting and some others are displayed in my online
exhibition on the ‘THE TREE OF LIFE' which started a couple of days ago and will
continue till the 15th of June. Do take a look!
Have a great week ahead :)
